Discovering the Beauty of Painterly Wall Art

Discovering the Beauty of Painterly Wall Art

Hello again,

The first time I heard the word "Painterly" was decades ago during my first year at university studying Interior Design. We focused heavily on drawing and painting in the first 12 months.  One day I vividly remember my lecturer, Fred, remarking on one of my works that my marks were "painterly." I loved how the word sounded and it made me feel like my work was somehow validated. The word stuck with me from that moment on, encapsulating a style that I’ve come to love and appreciate deeply.

What is Painterly Art?

Painterly refers to a style of painting where the brushstrokes and texture are visible, creating a sense of movement and depth. This technique celebrates the act of painting itself, with a focus on colour, texture, and light rather than precise details. The term "Painterly" was popularised by art historian Heinrich Wölfflin, who contrasted it with the linear style, where lines and contours are sharply defined.

Famous Painterly Artists and Techniques

Throughout art history, many artists have embraced the Painterly style. Here are a few notable examples:

1. Vincent van Gogh: Known for his expressive brushstrokes and vibrant colours, Van Gogh’s works like "Starry Night" epitomise the Painterly approach. His swirling, dynamic strokes bring a sense of emotion and movement to the canvas.

2. Claude Monet: A leader of the Impressionist movement, Monet’s use of light and colour in works such as "Water Lilies" captures fleeting moments with broad, visible strokes, emphasising the overall impression over fine details.

3. Franz Marc: His vivid use of colour and form, particularly in pieces like "Blue Horse," showcase a Painterly style that communicates intense emotional and symbolic content.
